Jenny Nicholls reviews Herbst: Architecture in context by John Walsh for Waiheke Weekender:

‘If I won Lotto, a house designed by the architects Lance and Nicola Herbst would be top of my fantasy wish list.

You can see their work on Waiheke – the easiest to spot is a beach house carved into the base of a cliff on the Onetangi beach front: clean and confident in design, every detail thought through. It also uses wood beautifully, a trademark of Herbst houses. There’s another at Onetangi: the famous ‘Lantern House’, described in this book by architecture maven John Walsh, along with 11 other residential buildings.

Like these airy, graceful homes, this is an exquisitely crafted book, its materials (creamy paper and stitch binding) allowing each spread to open flat, without deep gutters to gobble the photographs. This is a good thing, as the images in this book are by New Zealand’s leading architectural photographers: Patrick Reynolds, Simon Devitt, Jackie Meiring, Sam Hartnett and Simon Wilson (no, not the Herald columnist).

A sumptuous, visually led book describing the life and some of the works of two of New Zealand’s finest architects.’
