What we can learn from animals, from a vet-turned-author

Marcus Taylor has been a vet since 2013. His memoir, The Ones That Bit Me! Camels, cows and other young-vet stories, published by Massey University Press is out August 8. RRP: $39.99.

Why did you become a vet?

When my parents brought home our first pet, a tiny black kitten named Possum, I was so happy that I looked at my dad and said, "This is like a dream!".

I adored Possum, and every other pet we had. The simple love and affection that pets show is priceless. I've always found wildlife fascinating, a passion that started from watching the late Steve Irwin in action and expanded into creature-finding expeditions around the garden and during travels overseas. Diving at the Great Barrier Reef when I was 15 further hooked me on nature's wonders.

The real question is how well those passions translate into what vets do on a day-to-day basis. That's an important consideration for anyone thinking about the profession. I found that the fast pace and bright light setting of companion animal practice wasn't for me (although there are still plenty of those stories in the book!), so I gravitated towards large animal medicine and working as a contractor around the world, which suited me much better.
