Named after New Zealand historian and poet William (Bill) Oliver (1925-2015), the W. H. Oliver prize is awarded to the best book on any aspect of New Zealand history. Paul Diamond’s 2022 book Downfall: The Destruction of Charles Mackay won the 2023 prize along with Rachel Buchanan’s Te Motunui Epa (Bridget Williams Books).
