Zak Holland reviews A Queer Existence for Tui Motu:
‘A Queer Existence is an important, impactful and emotional book. If you’re not familiar with the history of gay rights in Aotearoa then this is an important read for you, as it was for me. I found learning what life was like for gay men only 40 years ago, before the Homosexual Law Reform Act of 1986, was confronting and saddening. Their struggle was real and I recognise they paved the way for those of us who are gay to live open and proud lives now.
I hadn’t put much thought into homosexuality being illegal before reading this book. Although I’ve watched films and TV shows about it, reading about what happened in my own country before the law of 1986 and subsequent legislation, brought a scary realism and made me grateful to be born in 1988.’
