Cartography Is Here — review essay of We Are Here

‘Originality is one of the prevailing strengths of the atlas, which manifests itself on at least two levels. At the holistic level, the originality is delivered through powerful stories, many of which have never been told before. Their careful assembly makes a meaningful narrative about (predominantly) contemporary New Zealand, its land, its people, its treasures. In the Afterword, Lillian Grace (2019), one of the contributing essayists, shares the following notion: ‘‘We Are Here gives us glimpses of ourselves, of our land, the things we care about, and of the things we didn’t know to wonder.’’ Her view is not an exaggeration. At a more granular level, Chris and Tim frequently resort to innovation to present a particular story.’
