About the Publisher

Nicola Legat Nicola Legat ONZM is the founding publisher of Massey University Press. Her list reflects the Press’s core principles of ‘explore, explain, engage’.

Nicola was Publishing Director of Random House New Zealand (now Penguin Random House New Zealand). During that time, Random House won the New Zealand Publisher of the Year Award seven years in a row.

She is also a former editor of Metro magazine and a member of numerous literary and publishing organisations, including Chair of the New Zealand Book Awards Charitable Trust and Deputy Chair of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival Trust.

Nicola leads a team of highly experienced editors, proofreaders, designers, project editors and indexers, and the press is committed to delivering a superb standard of service, author care and market support.

The Editorial Board

Anna Brown

Professor, Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts, Massey University

Anna Brown is a book designer, educator and researcher who works with visual artists, curators, art historians and musicians. She has taught editorial design, typography, and courses about the future of the book. Anna is the Director of Toi Āria — Design for Public Good, a research unit harnessing design for positive social change. Prior to joining Massey, she ran her own design business with a specialisation in book design.

Kerry Taylor

Head of the School of Humanities and director of the W. H. Oliver Humanities Research Academy at Massey University

Kerry is an historian whose work has been mainly on the history of the left and political dissent, and the history of material culture in New Zealand.

Kevin Chapman

Publisher, Upstart Press

Kevin Chapman has been in book publishing for over thirty years in New Zealand, the UK, Canada, the US and Australia. He has worked in general trade publishing and book packaging, and prior to starting Upstart Press was Managing Director of Hachette NZ (previously Hodder Moa Beckett) for over fifteen years. Kevin has been heavily involved in publishing industry activities for many years, including as a former president of the Publishers Association of New Zealand.

Darryn Joseph

Associate Professor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences Te Kura Pūkenga Tangata, Massey University

Darryn teaches te reo and Māori creative writing to undergraduate and postgraduate students at Te Pūtahi-a-Toi. He is an award-winning author of children’s books and adult short stories written and conceived in te reo Māori.

Jodie Hunter

Professor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences Te Kura Pūkenga Tangata, Massey University

Jodie Hunter is a lecturer in the Institute of Education and teaches papers in the area of mathematics education and Pasifika education. She has previously worked in the area of mathematics education at Plymouth University, United Kingdom, in the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching and Learning. Her research interests include effective mathematics teaching and culturally responsive teaching for Pasifika learners.

Sue Elliott

Strategic communications adviser

Sue Elliott has had a 35-year career in communications and government relations advice. She has also worked extensively in the cultural sector, largely in a governance role for the Wellington Regional Stadium Trust, International Arts Festival, Wellington Museums’ Trust and the Wellington Sculpture Trust, which she has chaired for the past 12 years. Recently, she co-founded Public Art Heritage Aotearoa, a research initiative to promote, document and protect New Zealand’s 20^th century public art and which has established New Zealand’s first national online database.

Yes, under the MasseyTexts imprint. We are especially interested in textbooks designed to be used in degree papers within the university itself.

Does Massey University Press publish papers from symposia, seminars and conferences?

We may decide to publish these under our Massey Symposia Series imprint. We would discuss with the organiser whether papers are to be published as a limited run with targeted distribution, or whether the collection might also have a place in the wider book-trade environment. The peer-reviewed papers would be published to a very high standard in an attractive book format.

Does Massey University Press publish theses?

No, but we are interested in hearing from authors who have a thesis that could be reshaped into a book. For more information on things to keep in mind, please refer to our notes on turning your thesis into a book.

If you wish to make a submission, please follow our standard submissions guidelines.

Does Massey University Press accept unsolicited manuscript submissions?

We welcome proposals from both Massey researchers and authors outside the university that fit our publishing programme. If you wish to make a submission, please review our submissions guidelines first. Please note that our Annual Ink imprint does not accept unsolicited submissions.

How will my book be publicised and marketed?

We back all of our books with a full sales, marketing and publicity programme appropriate to the nature of the book. We will also take full advantage of any social-media opportunities.

Will my book also be available as an ebook?

In most cases we will publish an ebook edition simultaneously with the print book edition. Ebook editions will be widely available on all leading ebook retailer sites.

Will my book be available overseas?

Where applicable, we will work with international distributors to ensure that your book gets to markets in Australia, the Pacific, North America, Europe and Asia.

Where can I buy Massey University Press books?

We appreciate the support of New Zealand’s best booksellers, but if your local bookstore does not stock our titles you can also purchase them directly via our website or as ebooks downloadable from Amazon, Google, Apple and Kobo online stores. Our titles are available in North America via IPG, in the United Kingdom and Europe via Gazelle Book Services, and in Australia via John Reed Books. Our New Zealand distributor is David Bateman Ltd.

Yes, you do. Please contact us with details of the material you wish to reproduce.

Does Massey University Press supply alternative formats to tertiary students with print disability?

Yes. If you are tertiary student requiring an accessible format of one of our publications please direct your enquiry through the Disability Service at your institution of study.

How long will my order take to arrive?

Domestic deliveries take up to five working days to arrive.

International deliveries take up to 14 working days to arrive.

Ebook orders are usually processed within 24 hours, however, purchases made on the weekend or on a public holiday will be processed the next working day.

Who do I contact if my order hasn’t arrived?

If your order is being shipped to a New Zealand address and has not arrived within five days (14 days for international orders), please contact editor@masseypress.ac.nz.

Can I track my order?

No, you are not able to track your own order. However, if you email us at editor@masseypress.ac.nz, we are able to track your order for you.

Refunds and returns

Massey University Press will meet its obligations under the Consumer Guarantees Act. If your book is damaged, please let us know as soon as possible and we will arrange for a replacement copy to be sent. We do not offer refunds if you change your mind about a purchase.
